ARTIST TALK: Girl Raised in Detroit — A Conversation with Sydney G. James

  • Urban Growler Brewing Co. 2325 Endicott Street Saint Paul, MN, 55114 United States (map)

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED FROM ITS ORIGINAL JUNE DATE TO FRIDAY, JULY 14, 2023.

Discover the work of 2023 Chroma Zone muralist Sydney G. James, a proud Detroit native and co-founder of the biannual BLKOUT Walls street mural festival in Detroit, during this hour long conversation with performing arts presenter Maia Maiden at women-owned Urban Growler Brewing Co. on Friday, July 14th from 7-8 p.m.

Come early to enjoy great food and drink, and a chance to socialize before the talk. Doors to the barrel room open at 6:15.

Sydney’s art – found on walls, canvas, fabric, Vans shoes and whatever she chooses – is synonymous with color and brushwork that is both strikingly defiant and ever-changing. “She is a painter on a pointed mission to let each brush stroke spark conversations long silenced. In paintings and murals, Black women are first. Never last and never forgotten. Her works boldy rewrite the narrative in hues evoking the complexities of Black reality, joy and pain, and phoenix-like resilience.” More at sydneygjames.com and @sydneygjames.

Be sure to check out Sydney’s work as she transforms the West wall of 602 Prior Ave N. for Chroma Zone July 10th-15th. More here.
