Chroma Zone Mural Artist 2022

Hibaaq Ibrahim

Hibaaq Ibrahim is a botanical and abstract muralist living in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was born in Sweden and has moved over 20 times. This drives her sense of curiosity and exploration. Every new home and neighborhood was an opportunity to discover; new friends, new flowers, new places to bike to.

This carries over into her artistic practice. “I’ve always wondered what it would be like to step into a painting. That’s why I paint murals. The art is so big that you have to physically move around to see it all!” With her liberal use of color and familiar shapes, she aims to spark joy in viewers.

Her work features elements that are specific to the spaces they reside in. The botanicals, shapes, and colors in her murals can often be found nearby. This creates a subtle sense of repetition and harmony. Her designs appear to extend beyond the wall, drawing the eyes to look around the entire space. This is why Hibaaq thinks of herself as a designer rather than a muralist. Murals are the medium with which she can create an intentional atmosphere.

This mural is about an artist’s journey in exploring their own mind. As artists, we all have something that sparks our pull to create. For me those things are exploration and plants. I’ve shared a love of plants with my mother from childhood and the lessons I learn from nature fuel my art.
