Chroma Zone Mural Artist 2022

Jose Dominguez

Jose Dominguez is a Minneapolis-based mixed-media artist and illustrator born in Casa Grande, Arizona; and raised in Colorado, Wyoming, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. His early work was a reflection of growing up as a Hispanic in the United States and the struggle of finding his place. Dominguez's recent work has evolved into colorful, playful compositions that incorporate characters and other non-human forms to convey a universal human experience.

Dominguez's work is included in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago. In 2018, Public Functionary hosted his first solo exhibition in the Twin Cities: The Art of Avoiding PPL. The Minnesota Museum of American Art in Saint Paul featured his 2020 vinyl installation: It's Okay to Laugh, in the skyway above Robert Street. Dominguez received his BA degrees in Graphic Design and Studio Art from Winona State University.

When given the opportunity to add a mural to Terra Firma’s space, I wanted to create something that combined elements from their line of work with playful characters and colors from mine. I’ve always felt a sense of wonder when seeing the clever, whimsical structures that some builders have come up with. I set out to do the same and explored what it could look like if I took found objects and converted them into fun tiny homes that my characters would live in. I hope that I’ve created a similar magic for people who walk past the bright and colorful “Clubhouse City”
