Chroma Zone Mural Artist 2022

Joy Spika

Joy Spika is a black identifying artist with a mixed cultural background. She incorporates her personal stories into all of her work. She is a mixed media artist with a deep love for aerosol murals, painting, and textile art. She believes in the power of art to heal and connect people. From a young age she has used art as a fundamental form of expression and communication. Joy finds Inspiration through her intuitive understanding of the world around her and those things that aren’t always visible. Joy uses her art as a channel to retrieve messages from her ancestors and guides. Art has always been her primary spirituality.

The characters she creates are often exaggerated or dream like versions of her current emotions and still images of what her internal life looks like.

There is life and potential beneath the surface of the reef; something ready to emerge. There is something as equally important to feel during this period of isolation. It is a opportunity for examination and reflection. Time to assess her wounds more carefully. Her inner world is creating something that will inform how the world around her grows. Microorganisms create a halo of light around her head as she ponders and rests. She is isolated but not alone. She talks to the spirits of the water and waits for readiness to return. She can now discard her pain, one color filled bubble at a time. When she is ready she will begin again.
